Kruger Park and Sabi Sands are probably the richest wildlife areas in South Africa, where you are promised a fantastic wildlife experience. There is a big difference between going on a wildlife safari inside Kruger Park compared to staying in the private game reserves that surround the Kruger National Park.
Most of the fences between Kruger Park and the private reserves such as Sabi Sands, MalaMala, Ngala etc have been removed, and so the wildlife can roam freely amongst the different areas, according to the available water and food.
The private lodges are generally between 3 and 5 star status. Their rates will include accommodation (most are air-conditioned), all meals (either 2 large or 3 standard per day), safari activities (typically 2 open vehicle game drives and an option bush walk) and the top lodges often include the drinks as well.
The public accommodation inside Kruger Park is self-catering and between 1 and 2 star status. The chalets will either have private (en-suite) bathrooms or shared communal bathrooms. Some have their own kitchens or they share communal kitchens. Most of the camps have restaurants, where one can experience 'Kruger food' !! We no longer book accommodation for tourists wanting to stay inside Kruger in the Restcamps.... too many complaints from past clients and I do not approve of their 31-page contract they insist Tour Operators sign - they have some unacceptable and ridiculous clauses in it!
To get to/from Kruger, Sabi Sands or other private game lodges, we can either book you on the Johannesburg flight shuttles (departures from 1 to 3 times a day) or a commercial flight to one of 3 major airports or rent you a car and you drive there. The flights take about an hour and self-drive takes from 4 to 8 hours, depending on which are you are going to.
Remember, wildlife have legs and they do not have schedules - and so they when going on a wildlife safari holiday, you cannot be promised to see the "Big 5". If you stay at the private lodges, there is a very good chance of seeing the big 5, if you spend 2 nights or more, as lots of the animals are territorial and so the rangers know the general location of them, from the previous game drive and so often are able to relocate them.
Private safari wildlife lodges in the Greater Kruger Park will offer you a far superior experience of game-viewing, than staying in the large and non-personal public camps inside the Park. Trust me, I have been to and had far superior wildlife experiences, much much better food, vastly superior accommodation and a much better nights sleep... spend that little extra and stay in a private lodge.
