Rhino Walking Safaris
Rhino Walking Safaris
We specialise in luxury walking safaris, the most rewarding way to discover and experience the secrets of the wilderness. Our walking trails are limited to 8 guests guided by two armed rangers. Our guides meet the stringent requirements of the South African National Parks and senior guides hold the highest guiding qualification possible in South Africa. After an introductory brief on the ‘do’s & don’ts’ of bush walking safaris, the guide will structure the trail taking into account the fitness level of the group and any special requests. Departures are before breakfast and again in the late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, with the average duration between 3 and 4 hours. Walks may be lengthened or shortened depending on the group’s desires and fitness levels.  Our guides will share their wealth of ‘bush culture’; the identification of animals, trees, grasses, insects, birds, the medicinal uses of plants, local folk lore and basic tracking & survival skills. Nothing is predictable in the bush therefore each safari offers a potentially new experience.

Location
Rhino Walking Safaris offers exclusive traversing in 12 000 hectares of pristine bushveld in the only official wilderness concession awarded in the Kruger National Park. Approximately 10km North East (as the hornbill flies) of Skukuza Rest Camp, the concession shares a 15km boundary with Mala Mala in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, with game moving freely between the two reserves. The concession comprises of environmentally sensitive areas previously unexplored, with huge diversity of both fauna and flora – an ideal setting for wilderness walking safaris in an internationally renowned big five area.

How do our Walking Safaris operate?
We offer a walking safari experience that comprises of three stages. Instead of dropping our explorers into the heart of a wilderness we prefer to slowly introduce them to the acquired taste of a true wilderness walking safari, thereby enriching their experience that much more. As our guests become more learned of the bush; they enter more and more pristine areas slowly leaving behind the trappings of civilisation. All guests arrive at Rhino Post Safari Lodge, the gateway to our wilderness. From here they enter the spirit of the wilderness explorer with one or two safari drives or walks within the proximity of the lodge, always returning back to base.

Plains Camp
Guest will either arrive at Plains camp on foot or by vehicle, depending where their previous night was spent. Plains Camp is situated in the heart of the wilderness concession. Built in authentic pioneer tradition, it has the serenity of a 19th century naturalists rest. Overlooking the spectacular Timbitene plain & waterhole, it offers 4 comfortably furnished African explorer style tents en suite, nestled in an acacia Knobthorn thicket.  After an early morning wake-up and an invigorating cup of fresh coffee in the lounge, guests set off on trail where our guides will share their experience of the diverse areas situated within the proximity of Plains Camp. The heat of the day will be spent at the camp, enjoying our small Africana book collection or the plunge pool overlooking the plain, which is often host to zebra, buffalo, giraffe, elephant, rhino and lion. Afternoon walks and sundowners complete a fulfilling African experience.  A generator and a back-up battery system power overhead fans and 24 hour lighting. The generator system can be used to re-charge camera batteries at specific times.
